2025 Chuah Chow Peng

2025 Chuah Chow Peng

Sportsman of the Year, 1970 Captain of Gilbert House The perennial sportsman - there wasn’t a sport Chow Peng didn’t play @ SGI. Football, Hockey, Basketball, Badminton you name it, he played it. On the track, he ran sprints: 100m, 200m, 400m - both individual & team. His under 15 school record for 100m, still remains unbroken after 55 years. He wasn’t just a sportsman - he was, and still is, an icon of SGI 1970. It’s hard to think of Taiping, without thinking of Chow Peng.

1969 Cheah Eng Seng

1969 Cheah Eng Seng

Cheah Eng Seng was one of only two Georgians chosen for the prestigious Royal Military College in 1969 - a proud moment for SGI and for us, his friends. In the photo, he holds the standard-issue SLR rifle, heavy and powerful, the pride of the Malaysian Armed Forces then. Some, seeing the James Dean poster beside him, joked he was a rebel without a cause. Today, that “rebel” is a Pastor, guiding his flock towards salvation.

These 12 year olds went on to varied careers, but all share the bond of those early school life to this day. A facinating feature of this class is: Two pastors have come from this class - Rev Tan Wee Li (standing last row 4th from right), a celebrated speaker and former President of the Methodist Foundation, New England, USA, and Pastor Cheah Eng Seng (standing last row 4th from left), now leading Setia Alam Community Church, Selangor. Two Shepherds from One Classroom.

All were self-taught, learning chords and tunes by ear. What began as casual strumming became a shared passion, with music binding their friendship as tightly as their school days did.

1972 Maxwell Hills Form 6

This is a group of Form 6 students on a couple of days trip to the Maxwells Hill. During the staycation, at the Bungalow they had rented, the first night saw boys on one side of the hall, girls on the other. Someone began telling ghost stories from the old bungalows, and soon others joined in. The tales grew so chilling that, by the end, no one dared walk back to their rooms. Instead, everyone stayed put, curling up where they sat and drifting off to sleep together till morning light.

1970 Taiping AV Association

In 1970, the SGI Audio Visual Association - led by President Yee Choy Kai and guided by advisor Mr. Sant Singh - turned the school hall into a cinema for just 25 cents a ticket. Members also ran a small stall outside the hall, selling titbits and drinks to the students. Screenings of classics like The Guns of Navarone and Georgy Girl became exciting events, adding some sparkle to student life.
