I had promised to write a post about the best restaurants in Taiping, Matang, and Kuala Sepetang – and here it is. After days of digging through reviews, food blogs, and ratings (and working with AI apps), I’ve put together a list of the 10 Best Restaurants in these three places. Out of these, 7 are Chinese restaurants, 2 are Indian, and 1 is Malay.
Just like I did for the Taiping Hawker Food Guide write-up, I got help from my two AI 'assistants' – ChatGPT and Gemini AI. I defined what a Chinese restaurant in the context of this write-up was, gave a broad basis for selection, and asked them to give me their top 10 picks. They each came up with different lists, but only three restaurants appeared in both: Soon Lee, Rasa Sayang Seafood, and Yu Xiang Seafood. Those three automatically made it into my final list.
To pick the remaining four, I needed to be sure both apps were judging similarly. Their explanations were a bit too technical, so I created my own simpler judging system with weightage given to the following:
1. Taste and Food Quality – 50%
2. Ambience and Comfort – 10%
3. Service – 10%
4. Variety & Special Dishes – 10%
5. Value for Money – 10%
6. Consistency & Reputation – 10%

I told the AI apps to use all the information they can find online – Google ratings, TripAdvisor reviews, foodie blogs, food delivery platforms, social media buzz, YouTube channels, and feedback from locals. But they had to stick to my weightage. They came back with new lists, and this time 4 more restaurants appeared in both. That gave me the Top 7 Chinese Restaurants in Taiping, Matang & Kuala Sepetang.

Top 2 Indian Restaurants in Taiping, Matang & Kuala Sepetang
Unlike the Chinese restaurant selection, my process for Indian restaurants was more straightforward. I began with four options but decided not to include two:
· Seni Sattisorru Taiping
Excellent, fiery curries, but spice levels may overwhelm most Chinese readers (who make up more than 80% of my readers).
· Chetty Tiffin Taiping
A great breakfast spot, but better suited for my earlier,Taiping Hawker Food write-up. I will be including Chetty Tiffin there.
So here are the two that made it to this list:
1. Kris Indian Cuisine (4.17)
Style: Traditional South Indian, both veg and non-veg meals
Popular items: Chicken curry, Banana Leaf meal
Ambience: Homey, clean, friendly staff
Others: WiFi, easy roadside parking
Address: 182 Jalan Kota, 34000 Taiping
Hours: 7.00am – 7.00pm (Saturday closes 3.00pm)

2. Sri Annapoorna Curry House (3.93)
Style: Traditional South Indian, vegetarian-friendly
Popular items: Banana leaf meal, masala thosai, masala tea
Ambience: Welcoming, with air-con and non-aircon sections
Others: Owner often present
Address: 164 & 166 Jalan Taming Sari, 34000 Taiping
Hours: 7.00am – 8.00pm (daily)

Malay Restaurant in Taiping, Matang & Kuala Sepetang
Choosing a Malay restaurant was tricky. Taiping has many hawker stalls with single-dish favourites, but few full-fledged sit-down Malay restaurants with consistency. In the end, I chose Nasi Lemak Warung Muhibbah – not a fancy place, but a local favourite that delivers on taste.
Style: Nasi Lemak for breakfast & brunch
Popular items: Nasi lemak with fried chicken, rendang, sambal sotong, shrimp, curry mee, roti canai
Ambience: Simple roadside warung – more functional than fancy
Others: Very popular with locals, food sells out early on busy days
Score: 4.10 from 528 Google reviews (very impressive for a stall)
Address: Jalan Sultan Mansor, Taiping
Hours: 6.00am – 11.00am (closed Mon & Tue)

Conclusion
Taiping may not be as big as Penang or Kuala Lumpur, but its food culture is just as rich. From Chinese seafood banquets to fiery Indian curries and the comforting simplicity of Malay nasi lemak, each restaurant here reflects a piece of the town’s identity. Together, they show why Taiping remains a place where tradition and taste go hand in hand. Whether you’re a returning local, a curious traveller, or simply someone chasing a good meal, these ten picks offer more than food – they offer a glimpse into the town’s soul.
Finis. Bon Apetit!
