A small group of us, old Georgians living in the Klang Valley, have been holding our annual 'Banana Leaf Lunch & Beer Get-Together’ at the Royal Selangor Club (RSC) at Dataran Merdeka in KL for a few years now.
The function usually kicks off at the Indian Eatery in the club at 12 noon and continues with beer and desserts in the main building until about 5 PM.
Typically, most attendees leave their cars at home and hail a Grab or take the LRT to Masjid Jamek station, from where they take a 10-minute walk to the club. After the function, a few of us who brought cars will drop them back at the LRT station.
As almost all schoolmates from overseas have expressed interest in having a Banana Leaf meal on one or more occasions in the past, we may include the tried and tested and very successful annual ‘RSC Banana Leaf Lunch & Beer Get-Together’ for 2026, as one of the SGI 1970 Class Reunion activities.
Should we finally decide to include the event as part of the reunion, we would invite all schoolmates from the Class of 1970 to join us at the centrally located RSC Dataran Merdeka for lunch. Everyone who is a member of any of the three SGI 1970 WhatsApp groups will be invited.
It will be an afternoon of good food and beer, in a nice ambiance, and in the company of old friends. You'll get to see schoolmates you might not have met in decades. At our age, we shouldn't miss rare meet-up opportunities like this.
Up until this year's gathering, held on July 5th, we hadn't considered extending invitations to spouses of the participants, simply because of a practical dilemma: "What will the spouses do for five hours as we men continue yakking away with our school stories and inside jokes?!"
As we get closer to the event and based on feedback from past participants, we will decide if the undeclared 'no spouse' rule needs to be maintained for the next lunch meet-up. Cheers!
