Taiping, My Hometown - The 3rd Most Sustainable City in the World

I spent my first 17 years in Taiping. It was where I went to school, made lifelong friends, and learnt some of the most important lessons of life - both inside and outside the classrooms. For me and many of my classmates. Taiping wasn't just a hometown, It was where our roots took hold.

So when I came across the news that Taiping had been named the third most sustainable city in the world back in 2019 - by none other than the World Urban Forum - I felt giddy with excitement. A strange mix of quiet pride and deep satisfaction took hold.

Those of us who knew Taiping in its earlier days - who cycled around it's rain-soaked streets, strolled under the giant trees by the Lake, or watched the morning mist roll down from Bukit Larut - already sensed there was something different about our place. Something lasting.

But if you’ve never been to this little town in Perak, you might be wondering - what exactly makes it “sustainable”? And why does that even matter? To get a clear, objective answer, I turned to ChatGPT.

What Does ChatGPT Say About Taiping’s Global Recognition?

To get a fresh perspective, I asked ChatGPT to explain why Taiping was recognised globally for its sustainability. Here's what it had to say:

What Does “Sustainable” Really Mean?

In essence, a sustainable city is one that safeguards the well-being of its people, preserves its natural environment, and honours its cultural heritage - all without compromising the needs of future generations. Sustainability is not defined by towering skyscrapers or high-speed infrastructure alone. Rather, it is reflected in the quality of life, the care for shared resources, and the legacy left for those who come after. In the case of Taiping, sustainability is not expressed through grand declarations or bold headlines, but through quiet, enduring efforts: well-maintained parks, preserved historic sites, safe and welcoming public spaces, and a way of life that still allows space for thoughtfulness and connection.

Why did Taiping Stand Out on the Global Stage?

Taiping’s recognition on the international stage stems from several distinct qualities that align with modern principles of sustainable urban development:

1. Nature Was Never an Afterthought

Taiping has long been admired for its rich natural environment. The iconic rain trees surrounding the Lake Gardens, the cool refuge of Maxwell Hill, and the refreshing clarity of air after frequent rainfall are all integral to the town’s character. This consistent commitment to environmental stewardship has placed Taiping in alignment with global sustainability goals. Its success in protecting and integrating green spaces into daily life was a significant factor in its international acclaim.

2. Heritage Remains Intact

Taiping occupies a special place in Malaysian history, having been the site of many national firsts - including the first railway, hill station, museum, and zoo. Yet what truly distinguishes the town is its thoughtful preservation of heritage. Colonial-era architecture, vintage shoplots, and historical buildings continue to shape the streetscape, offering residents and visitors a tangible connection to the past. This dedication to cultural continuity is increasingly rare, and represents a meaningful investment in identity and legacy.

3. A Town Designed for Livability

Taiping continues to uphold a human-centred model of urban living. Public parks are easily accessible, streets are walkable, and public spaces encourage social interaction. The town maintains an atmosphere of safety, calm, and communal warmth. In contrast to the often frantic pace of larger urban centres, Taiping’s design fosters a balanced and humane lifestyle - qualities that have not gone unnoticed by global advocates of sustainable development.

4. A Community That Participates

Civic participation is a defining feature of Taiping’s sustainability story. Local residents actively engage in environmental initiatives, heritage preservation efforts, and the promotion of eco-friendly tourism. Such involvement reflects a community ethos where progress is driven not only by policy but by public commitment. It is this spirit of shared responsibility that continues to reinforce Taiping’s reputation as a model of sustainable living.

As our class reunion looms ahead - marking 56 years since we left school - it feels fitting that Taiping itself has been acknowledged in this quiet, delightfully dignified way.

Taiping never chased recognition. It just kept doing what it has always done - looking after what matters. There’s a quiet strength and wisdom in that. A kind of wisdom we didn’t notice at 17, but maybe one we’ve slowly come to appreciate now, in our 70s.

For the reunion, we’ll find ourselves back in Taiping. Swapping stories, snapping photos, yum seng-ing over beer, laughing over old jokes. And in the midst of all that revelry and camaraderie, maybe we’ll also realise something: that the town we left behind wasn’t stuck in the past - it was simply ahead of its time, in knowing what to hold on to.

Maybe it's the perfect reality-check. A reminder of life itself - that progress isn’t always about moving fast or building big. It's also about staying true to your roots, preserving what matters, and living with a sense of purpose. Perhaps it has taken a lifetime of stepping away, for us to appreciate the true value of the town that shaped us… and continues to shape us still.
